Chartham Park Golf & Country Club in West Sussex is undergoing a major bunker redevelopment project that should preserve the distinctive character of the course for years to come.

Chartham Park Golf & Country Club has embarked on an exciting bunker redevelopment project designed to elevate the course’s playability, visual appeal and long-term sustainability.
The work is being led by renowned golf course architect Jonathan Gaunt, whose portfolio includes some of the UK’s most respected modern course renovations. Construction is being expertly handled by John Greasley, one of the country’s leading specialists in golf course building and shaping.

The project aims to enhance the strategic design, consistency and aesthetic quality of Chartham Park’s bunkers. Over the years, natural wear, weather damage and sand contamination have affected bunker performance. This redevelopment addresses those issues comprehensively, upgrading drainage, reshaping faces and edges, and refining bunker positioning to ensure they remain fair, visually striking and relevant to the modern game.
Jonathan Gaunt’s design approach seeks to retain the natural character of Chartham Park while improving both the strategic interest and practical performance of its bunkers. The new designs integrate seamlessly into the existing landscape, providing consistent playability and a cleaner visual presentation throughout the course.
The transformation has been made possible thanks to the outstanding leadership of course manager Paul Meek and his dedicated team, who have worked tirelessly alongside the Greasley crew to ensure the project runs smoothly and to the highest standards. Their attention to detail and commitment have been instrumental in maintaining course quality while managing a large-scale redevelopment.

Golf manager Davide Mazzei has played a key role in coordinating communication and planning throughout the project. His support and hands-on involvement have helped ensure the redevelopment progresses efficiently with minimal disruption to members. Davide also expressed his gratitude to Paul and the entire greenkeeping team for their exceptional effort and professionalism.

Once complete, the redeveloped bunkers will enhance the course’s visual identity while delivering a number of key benefits, including:
• Improved playability with more consistent sand and drainage.
• Reduced maintenance requirements for the greenkeeping team.
• Better integration of bunker positioning with the natural landscape.
• An overall elevated experience for members and visitors alike.

This investment reflects Chartham Park’s ongoing commitment to providing a premium golfing experience and maintaining its reputation as one of the region’s finest courses. The updated bunkers will not only challenge and reward golfers of all abilities but also preserve the distinctive character of Chartham Park for years to come.
