The club described the scene as “hugely disappointing”. It said this was not the first time the course has been targeted, but it had decided to speak out now. Its CCTV will be reviewed, and the matter has been reported to the police.

In a statement on Facebook, the club said it is a welcoming and inclusive venue with a thriving membership of all ages, including people who simply enjoy the clubhouse. It acknowledged that golf may still be seen as elitist by some, but said Fereneze is not.

The club also pointed to its role in the community. Its facilities are used by local groups, it donates thousands of pounds to charities each year, and it gives tens of thousands of pounds’ worth of vouchers as raffle prizes and donations. “Where we can, we do our bit” for Barrhead, Neilston and the surrounding area, it said.

Describing itself as “scunnered but determined”, the club said it intends to identify those responsible and get the green back in top condition.
