How to remove mineral soiling from golf course machinery

When maintaining your machinery, do you come across some types of soiling that simply won’t shift? How about that reddish-brown buildup on the internal tanks of your vehicle sprayer? Or those white powdery crusts on your fertiliser sprayer nozzles?

This will likely be mineral soiling – a buildup of inorganic deposits from minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron or silicates – leading to limescale, rust and those reddish-brown iron oxide stains. If left, these deposits can corrode the surfaces underneath, shortening the lifespan of your equipment.

Mineral residues are typically hard to remove. They can chemically bond or mechanically embed into surfaces, especially porous or rough surfaces like metal, stone or glass. Unlike organic soiling (such as grease), mineral deposits do not dissolve in water or general-purpose cleaners. Scrubbing often does little, especially with hardened scales, and abrasive methods risk damage. Also, mineral soiling often builds up in layers, making it harder to remove over time if it is left.
