Hollinwell’s course manager retires after 42 years

After an incredible 42-year career at Hollinwell, the home of Notts Golf Club, including 23 years as head greenkeeper / course manager, Phil Stain is stepping away from his role, leaving behind a legacy of outstanding course management and environmental stewardship.

A true custodian of one of the UK’s finest heathland courses, Phil has been instrumental in maintaining Hollinwell’s reputation as a premier golfing destination. His expertise in promoting fine grasses and enhancing environmental sustainability has set a benchmark in modern greenkeeping, ensuring the course remains both playable and ecologically responsible for future generations.

Throughout his tenure, Phil has overseen course preparations for some of the most prestigious tournaments, including, The Boys Amateur Championship, The English Amateur Championship, Final Qualifying for The Open, and The Brabazon Trophy. His meticulous attention to detail and commitment to tournament-ready conditioning have consistently elevated the club’s status on the national and international stage.

Beyond his expertise in course preparation, Phil has also championed sustainable agronomy practices, playing a pivotal role in ensuring Hollinwell’s natural landscape thrives alongside its golfing heritage. His deep respect for nature and innovative approach to environmental management have shaped a course that not only challenges golfers but also supports local biodiversity.

Phil leaves Hollinwell in an exceptionally strong position, and his passion, leadership and knowledge will undoubtedly serve as an inspiration for the next generation of greenkeepers.

The R&A Sustainable Agronomy Service says it has extended its deepest gratitude to Phil for his remarkable contributions to the game. “We wish him the very best in his well-earned retirement and look forward to seeing how his legacy continues to shape the future of golf course management,” said a spokesman.
