The R&A Sustainable Agronomy Service has announced the appointment of Simon Olver as agronomist, GB&I.

Bringing 29 years of industry experience, Simon joins the team as it continues its commitment to helping golf courses become more sustainable, resilient and successful for generations to come.

Simon brings extensive experience in golf course management, underpinned by a BSc in Turfgrass Science, having worked across a diverse range of courses throughout his career. He began greenkeeping at Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Course in Northumberland at the age of 16, before progressing through senior course management roles at clubs including Whitley Bay Golf Club.

Most recently, Simon spent six years at Ganton, where he developed extensive experience in fine-turf management and adopted an approach that combines traditional course-management principles with modern technology and research. This philosophy will be central to his new role, helping clubs build on the natural strengths and characteristics of their individual sites.

“I am delighted to be joining The R&A Sustainable Agronomy Service and becoming part of a team that is helping the industry move forward,” said Simon. “Throughout my career, I have always been passionate about authentic fine-turf management and combining traditional principles with a modern approach. Every golf course is different, and I’m looking forward to working with clubs to understand their individual environments, build on their existing strengths and identify practical ways to optimise course performance.”

In his new position, Simon will work with golf courses throughout Great Britain and Ireland, initially focusing on the commercial agronomy service while also contributing to the wider work of The R&A Agronomy team, including its championship activities.

Simon has complemented his practical experience with continued professional development, completing both a Foundation Degree and BSc during his career. He was also selected as an R&A Scholar and has played an active role within the wider greenkeeping industry.
