Gordon McKie leaves St Andrews Links after 30 years

Gordon McKie, who served as only the ninth ‘Keeper of the Green’ for the Old Course at St Andrews, has left his role as greenkeeping operations manager at St Andrews Links Trust after 30 years.

McKie began his career as deputy head greenkeeper at Tain Golf Club in the Highlands, where he worked from 1990 to 1995, before joining St Andrews Links Trust. He was head greenkeeper on both the Eden and New Courses, then became course manager of the Old Course in 2007, a role he held until 2023. More recently he has been greenkeeping operations manager for the Trust. He is also a national board director of BIGGA.

Announcing his departure first on Facebook and then on LinkedIn, McKie wrote: “After 30 years at St Andrews Links, I’m moving on to begin a new chapter in my life and career. It’s been an incredible journey and a privilege to work at the Home of Golf.”

He highlighted preparing the Old Course for the 2010, 2015 and 2022 Open Championships, and supporting major projects across the Links. “I’ve been fortunate to work alongside talented and dedicated colleagues who care deeply about the craft of greenkeeping,” he said.

McKie also pointed to his work recruiting, training and supporting the next generation of greenkeepers. “It’s something I’ve truly valued and will continue to champion wherever my path leads,” he said.

He also thanked colleagues and golfers from around the world. “What a privilege it has been to be part of such an iconic place,” he wrote. “Here’s to new adventures ahead, but a piece of my heart will always remain at St Andrews.”

McKie added: “I’m excited for what comes next and look forward to staying connected.”
