Following the introduction of Durabunker to Royal Lytham and The Belfry, Trump Turnberry recently became the latest Major championship venue to commission Durabunker. The setting of the famous ‘Duel in the Sun’ trialled the product on the new practice facilities, to great success.

Installation was carried out by the local greenkeeping team, led by Stuart Fergusson, who previously worked for Durabunker over a number of years on multiple projects both in the UK and overseas.

Rhydian Lewis, owner at Durabunker, commented: “Following on from working with Royal Lytham and The Belfry, it was a thrill to collaborate with Allan Patterson and his team at Trump Turnberry. The Durabunkers built have been well received and will provide Trump Turnberry with longevity on a very high traffic area.”

Allan Patterson, director of Golf Courses and Estates at Trump Turnberry, commented: “We have installed Durabunker in three of our practice bunkers and have been very happy with the final results.

“Feedback has been very positive and based on that, we will be doing the remaining seven bunkers on our short range practice area this coming winter.”

Other notable venues such as Royal Aberdeen and Hillside GC also adopted Durabunker at a similar time to Trump Turnberry, adding more world famous names to the Durabunker portfolio.

Lewis continued: “The advent of synthetic bunker faces some 15 years ago has changed the way in which course managers and designers alike view bunkers. The product is now firmly established as a key component of bunker design and construction and when coupled with a high quality liner, good design and quality construction, we can offer a complete solution to almost all bunker issues. Of course there will always be those who push back against synthetic materials being used in bunkers, but our experience is that this is mainly based on principle rather than any firm data, there can be no argument in terms of maintenance savings, cost savings, longevity, performance and design integrity. With the increase in cost of natural turf, constructing revetted bunker edges with our synthetic ‘sods’ actually costs comparatively less, even in the initial spend, but the savings over many decades is proving to be of huge benefit to our clients.”
