The Island GC cuts fertiliser usage

The Island Golf Club in Donabate: ‘The best course in Ireland, you’ve never heard of’ is making significant time and cost savings—thanks to the drought resistant cultivars in Barenbrug BAR FESCUE.
Head greenkeeper Dave Edmondson says: “The course tends to dry out much faster than most links courses, due its distance from the natural water table and strong north easterly winds. Fescue grasses are ideal for these types of conditions. But from a sustainable standpoint, Barenbrug BAR FESCUE is allowing us to use less water, less fertiliser and less chemicals; which means less intense management and disruption.”
He continues: “When I first started at the club, they were doing four fungicide sprays a year on the greens. However, as we continue to introducing BAR FESCUE, we’re just not getting any disease on the green. And we don’t have to use a great deal of water, because of the drought resistant grasses. So we can let the course dry out a little bit, and members get to enjoy true firm links conditions.”
He continues: “We mow the fairways once a week in the summer—once growth slows down. This makes for big savings on wear and tear to machines, and of course fuel. With less intense management, my team can concentrate on other tasks that help to raise the standard of the overall facility. By using Barenbrug BAR FESCUE, we know the course is going to perform to standard, without question.”
Barenbrug’s BAR FESCUE is a high quality seed with superior drought resistant cultivars, including the #1-ranked slender creeping and Chewings red fescues, Viktorka and Barlineus.
