Several golf clubs have been rewarded for their commitment to sustainability by being awarded certification by GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation.

For example, Carnoustie Golf Links has been awarded the certification for working towards achieving carbon net zero, a tree planting project and the increased use of digital monitoring systems and active community engagement through biodiversity events.

Craig Boath, head of Sustainability at Carnoustie Golf Links, said: “Our teams take great pride in continuously improving the sustainability of our estate, ensuring that environmental stewardship and social value are at the core of our operations. This commitment also allows a diverse range of community groups to enjoy Carnoustie Golf Links year-round. Sustainability is central to everything we do.”

Corhampton Golf Club in Hampshire has also been awarded the label.

Course manager, Lestyn Carpenter, states: “We aim to deliver through a more sustainable approach, which is good for both the environment and for golf. It’s about balancing the presentation of a high-quality golf course and providing a memorable experience within natural surroundings. It’s important to be as efficient as possible. It’s also about supporting the community in a range of ways that bring increased recognition, respect and contact. At a broader level, it’s important that golf credibly demonstrates its commitment, and its social and environmental value – strengthening the sport’s image and reputation for the long term.”

Conserving resources such as water and energy is important to the club, which is embracing the wider responsibility to ensure it is using as little as possible and is trying to be self-sufficient. A recent example of this is the introduction of solar panels across a number of rooftops on the estate.
