Ross on Wye Golf Club recently began a major bunker renovation with specialist bunker company Durabunker. Planned over two phases, all bunkers on the golf course will be renovated using a combination of DuraCrumb, Durabunker’s rubber crumb liner, and Durabunker’s patented synthetic bunker edging system.
The golf club commissioned Durabunker after a successful pilot project on the practice academy in early 2022 and have handed the design reins over to Durabunker, whilst undertaking the project on a managed contract basis, with the golf club staff working under the guidance of Durabunker for the majority of the construction and re-modelling work.
Rhydian Lewis, the co-inventor of the granted design patent associated with the construction of synthetic bunker edges, commented: “The golf club decided the best model for them was for us to lead the project, visiting site on a frequent basis to guide and work with their greenkeeping staff, enabling them to execute significant amounts of the work in-house. This enables them to learn new skills, get their teeth into a significant project with tangible benefits, whilst ensuring the golf club is making cost savings when compared to commissioning us as contractors.”
The project is already progressing well with nine bunkers re-modelled and completed in under four weeks, and Durabunker working closely with head greenkeeper Dylan Stokes on the shaping work, Durabunker staff installing the rubber crumb liner and training local staff in the installation of Durabunker synthetic revetment.
Dylan added: “The project has been a really great learning opportunity for myself and my team, who have taken to it with much enthusiasm and no little skill. Durabunker have had a strong presence on site which has been very valuable to us all. We’ve collaborated really well and their approach has ensured successful outcomes thus far. My team are growing more confident and capable with every passing day and the bunkers look absolutely fantastic.”
